The Australian Institute of Traffic Planning and Management (AITPM) provides a central point of reference for practitioners in traffic and transport planning and management. AITPM’s vision is to provide leadership in traffic and transport by contributing to the development and management of a transport system that benefits all Australians.

The institute has a rich history of serving and supporting the traffic and transport disciplines of Australia and beyond. Since its inaugural year it has been delivering state-based seminars, events and a national conference thanks to the tireless effort of volunteers from its 1000+ members across the country. The board and are committed to maintaining this culture and collaboration into the future. To do this they seek to appoint an Executive Officer.

Executive Officer - Role Overview

The EO will report to the board and be responsible for:

  • leading and managing AITPM operations
  • being the primary source of advice to the Board
  • successfully executing the AITPM strategic plan

This Executive Appointment will appeal to a self-starter, proven professional leader with excellent people skills who is keen to play a pivotal role in this exciting next phase of the industry. One of the core objectives of this role is to further boost AITPM membership satisfaction and boost the value that the institute offers the industry. This will, in turn, lead to greater membership numbers, increased partnership, and sponsorship opportunities and increased attendance at branch events and the annual national conference.

To be successful in this role you will have;

  • Excellent Stakeholder engagement skills are essential – this is a hands-on leadership role so it is key that the successful applicant has the ability and desire to actively engage with a range of stakeholders, including existing members, sponsors, partners, committees and the board.
  • Be personally motivated, capable and accountable for meeting key performance measures – these will include an increase in membership satisfaction and growth in membership numbers and revenue sources.
  • Self-efficacy as a leader – this role will be hugely influential on how the AITPM grows its value and relevance to the industry. It will require someone who has past experience leading others, being able to ‘manage upwards’ and balance day to day responsibilities with the implementation and refinement of the association’s strategic objectives.
  • An appreciation for the traffic and transport disciplines – the industry that the AITPM represents stands out because of the passionate and commitment of the members it represents. It is not essential for the EO to have a background in the industry, but it will be key that they can appreciate and build an understanding of the sector and professionals within.
  • An understanding of how associations work – prior experience working with an association will be advantageous. The previous structure of the association saw the board actively involved in the day to day operations. Your role will be to enable the board to focus on the strategic objectives.

The role will be responsible for;

  • Managing the day to day operations of the association and its current team/resources. The AITPM has been able to embrace flexibility in its existing team. The role will manage an existing, remotely based, team of contractors who help run the institute.
  • Building a greater understanding of the needs of its members so as to increase participation and memberships from within the traffic and transport industry. The role will see you engage with current and previous members to understand how the AITPM can deliver relevant and high value content, seminars and other services
  • Work with the organisations that sponsor and partner with the AITPM. The association works with a diverse range of private and public entities and is keen to build closer ties with existing and identify and build new relationships that will be relevant and of value to its membership base.
  • Working closely with the board on strategic goals of the association. As part of this you will chair and participate in committee meetings that cover a diverse range of ongoing and new initiatives.
  • Support the state branches to offer all members a greater chance to participate in events and build their professionals skills and understanding of the industry.
  • National conference support and co-ordination will greatly increase the value of the time that volunteers can commit to and better enable the conference organisers in delivering engaging content, speakers that attract a higher number of registrations
  • Nurture a culture of continuous improvement and collaboration across all states and association functions. There is a significant opportunity for greater sharing of knowledge, tools, and learnings across different branches and the professionals within.
