Our client is one of the largest public transports operators, providing services across Australia. They have developed a passionate and engaging brand in the transport sector and are one of the most well-known passenger transport operators in our operating regions.  

About the role

You will be working closely with the CFO, be expected to liaise with all levels within the organisation as well as key external stakeholders. You must, therefore, be both flexible and practical in your approach and possess a high degree of commercial acumen. 

At the same time, the role requires a “hands-on” approach to dealing with the day to day commercial, legal and governance issues that arise within the business. You must possess excellent communication skills in your management of all external/internal relationships with the organisation. 

Key Responsibilities

  • Serving as a trusted advisor and business partner across the company by providing counsel and guidance that are in line with clients’ overall business objectives and needs
  • Drafting, reviewing and negotiating a variety of government and commercial agreements including licensing and supplier and services agreements 
  • Managing external legal advisors
  • Assisting the business units to meet their strategic objectives and priorities
  • Providing independent, strategically focused, legal advice to key stakeholders in the business
  • Developing a strong understanding of the business and the external commercial, legal and regulatory environment
  • Maintaining effective corporate governance, including compliance and reporting obligations

About You

  • Broad legal training with a reputable legal firm
  • Relevant Law Degree, with a minimum of 5 years+ post-admission experience
  • Experience in negotiating government, commercial and property contracts
  • Knowledge of government contracts and the procurement process
  • Strong drafting and negotiation skills
  • Excellent communication and problem-solving skills
  • The ability to work in a close-knit team environment
  • In-house experience in a similar business environment will be considered advantageous but not essential
  • Experience in corporate acquisitions is also an advantage
